1 Adkins, Roy; Adkins, Lesley The War For All the Oceans: From Nelson at the Nile to Napoleon at Waterloo
New York, New York, U.S.A. Viking Press 2007 0670038644 / 9780670038640 First American Edition Hard Cover Near-Fine Fine 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
Near-fine condition. Stated First American Edition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $30.00. Nicely Illustrated. NO tears inside book. 534 pages. 8 pages in book front have underlining. Does NOT interfere with reading. IF not for this, I would have rated this book as Fine. Dustcover is clean and bright (NO tears). Synopsis The bestselling authors of "Nelsons Trafalgar" return to the Napoleonic War in this epic narrative of the naval struggle that lasted from 1798 to 1815, a period marked at the beginning by Napoleons seizing power and at the end by the War of 1812. Booklist In the nineteenth century, the British created the greatest maritime-based empire in world history. That empire was made possible by the domination of the Royal Navy, which was forged in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries in the fires of the Napoleonic Wars. The Adkins, who are both historians and archaeologists, have written a narrative history of British naval conflicts from 1798 to 1815. In that span, the Royal Navy engaged almost every major naval power, including France, Spain, Holland, and even the U.S. Naturally, the Adkins describe the exploits of naval icons, including Nelson and Hood, but their account is most engrossing when they utilize eyewitness accounts of ordinary seamen to capture the intensity of battle as well as the grind of day-to-day life aboard a warship. The Adkins display such superb technological knowledge of their subject that they can be excused for their occasional delving into "Britannica Rules the Waves" enthusiasm. A superior work of maritime history that both scholars and general readers should enjoy. Biography Roy Adkins and Lesley Adkins are both historians and archaeologists and fellows of the Society of Antiquaries of London. They are the authors of several works of history.

2 Allcard, Clare A Gypsy Life: The Adventures of Clare and Edward Allcard Aboard Their Yacht Johanne
W W Norton & Co Inc 1992 0393030725 / 9780393030723 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
A photo of this book is available. Fine Condition. Stated First Edition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Illustrated. NO writing, marks or tears. Tight spine, clean pages. 237 pages. Synopsis Clare Allcard and her husband, Edward, have dared to live a life that armchair adventurers can only dream about. Here Clare tells the story of their adventures aboard the Regina Johanne, a rotting, worm-riddled, 69-foot Baltic Trader they discovered beached in Antigua. Clare and Edward (a naval architect), their daughter Katy, and an ever-shifting crew spent twelve years on the Regina Johanne, working to replace rotten timbers, exterminating the worms that were devouring her hull, constructing a peculiar one-and-a-half poster bed in preparation for a cruise with Clare's parents, and patching the frayed sails by hand. While repairing the boat, they sailed from Antigua to Nevis, England, France, Denmark, and other exotic ports. Clare's insightful writing both addresses her family's personal experiences on the Regina Johanne and includes useful information about the ports they visited, critical advice on the predominant sailing conditions in each area, and characteristics of the various foreign cultures they encountered. Sailors and nonsailors alike will be inspired by Clare's fascinating discussion of the family's nomadic lifestyle aboard the Regina Johanne.

Synopsis: First You Have to Row a Little Boat touched the hearts of tens of thousands. It is an inspirational book, in the tradition of Robert Fulghum and M. Scott Peck, that shows what sailing teaches us about the lessons of life. Annotation: Using sailing as a metaphor for life, "this brilliantly written elegy gently teaches the fundamental principles of life and how to navigate its shoals" (M. Scott Peck, M.D., author of The Road Less Traveled. Publishers Weekly: Bode ( Blue Sloop at Dawn ) uses his great love of sailing as a metaphor for the tides of life. Describing his own introduction to sailing at age 12, he stresses the importance of mastering the simple, small things before attempting more complicated actions. Later the author purchases a blue sloop, matures and, as a grown man with children, decides to sell the sloop and sail into new, uncharted waters, assuming he will never forget the many important lessons the boat taught him. Other themes include complacency (``Going with the Wind''), confusion (``Fogbound''), forgiveness (``A Forgiving Boat''), and violence (``A Lazy Sailor at Heart''). Determinedly inspirational, this book will appeal to admirers of Robert Fulghum et al.

6 Braynard, Frank O. S.S. Savannah: The Elegant Steam Ship
Mineola, New York, U.S.A. Dover Pubns 1988 0486257509 / 9780486257501 Trade Paperback Very Good + 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

NO writing, marks or tears inside book. Review "A rousing tale of the sea and a fully documented analysis of these important historical questions."--Journal of Southern History Product Description This is the story of a ship and her pioneer master, Moses Rogers, who had the idea of making the first transatlantic voyage in a steam-propelled vessel. His "laudable and meritorious experiment" marked one of the world's maritime epochs. The conception and building of the S. S. Savannah was guided by the engineering genius of Captain Rogers who, with Robert Fulton, was a leading exponent of steam in his day. The momentous voyage began in Savannah, Georgia, in 1819, and took the courageous crew to England, Sweden, and Russia. These were the elegant steam ship's times of triumph. Yet she also had moments of pathos, from the first doubts and fears of a public that dubbed her a "steam coffin" to that sad day when a Washington newspaper said her engine could be removed for only $200, leaving her "just as good" as any other ship. The previously untold story of the first steam-powered vessel to cross the Atlantic is written in a scholarly, well-documented fashion, yet with the color, imagination, and humor of the men who lived it.

8 Burg, B.R. Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition: English Sea Rovers in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean
New York, New York, U.S.A. New York Univ Pr 1984 0814710735 / 9780814710739 Trade Paperback Very Good + 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
A photo of this book is available. Very-good+, clean condition. NO remainder marks or clippings. Tight spine, clean pages. NO writing or tears inside book. Covers are clean (NO tears). 215 pages. Product Description Pirates are among the most heavily romanticized and fabled characters in history. From Bluebeard to Captain Hook, they have been the subject of countless movies, books, children's tales, even a world-famous amusement park ride. In Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition, historian B. R. Burg investigates the social and sexual world of these sea rovers, a tightly bound brotherhood of men engaged in almost constant warfare. What, he asks, did these men, often on the high seas for years at a time, do for sexual fulfillment? Buccaneer sexuality differed widely from that of other all- male institutions such as prisons, for it existed not within a regimented structure of rule, regulations, and oppressive supervision, but instead operated in a society in which widespread toleration of homosexuality was the norm and conditions encouraged its practice. In his new introduction, Burg discusses the initial response to the book when it was published in 1983 and how our perspectives on all-male societies have since changed. Table of Contents Preface Introduction to the New Edition Introduction 1 Sodomy and Public Perception Seventeenth-Century England 1 2 To Train Up a Buccaneer 43 3 The Caribbee Isles 69 4 Buccaneer Sexuality 107 5 The Buccaneer Community 139 Notes 175 Bibliographical Essay 193 Index 211

Tight spine, bright pages. Map endpapers. Illustrated. NO tears inside book. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $10.00. Black boards with silver lettering (clean and bright). 288 pages. Quen Cultra built Queequeg in a barnyard, motored down the Mississippi - and sailed around the world. His previous experience was limited to rowboats. The total cost of his boat, a trimaran, was $6,000. His expenses at sea were less than three dollars a day. The pay-off? Three years of high adventure, fascinating sights, and a communion with nature that no amount of money could buy the conventional traveler. Cultra sailed with friends and took his time, staying long enough at each port to really sample the local cultures and sights. These ranged from the Small Nambas of Malakula (naked tribesmen who had never before seen a whiteman) to the socialites at the Cape Town Yacht Club. But there was also danger. Their first storm at sea was a hurricane; they were rammed by a freighter off Madagascar; becalmed and out of fresh water in the doldrums; attacked by sharks inside the Great Barrier Reef; washed up on a deserted coast. The book is must reading for anyone considering such an adventure, or for the adventurous armchair reader.
