Baker explains the science behind the new techniques with clarity and precision, and constructs fictional scenarios that serve as entertaining, if not wholly plausible, illustrations of possible post-reproductive revolution behavior: a typical sketch involves a middle-aged man lusting after a daughter cloned from his wife (it's not really incest, Baker points out, since the young woman is not genetically related to her "father"--as if DNA were all there is to parenthood). Kirkus Reviews An eloquent account of Turkey’s long campaign to rid itself of Armenians—and far longer campaign to disavow any responsibility for crimes against humanity. During the 1890s, writes memoirist (Black Dog of Fate, 1997) and poet Balakian, Sultan Abdul Hamid II launched a campaign of extermination against Armenia’s Christians, killing about 200,000 in a two-year period and setting "the template for most of the genocide that followed in the twentieth century." The Ottoman Empire’s resorting to state-sponsored murder against the Armenians was not without precedent; a few years earlier, the same sultan had ordered the massacre of thousands of Bulgarians who had been pressing for independence. Yet this crime was unprovoked, and it outraged the world; in the US, millions of dollars were raised for Armenian relief, and at the turn of the century nearly every American schoolchild could find Armenia on the map. The fall of the Ottomans and the rise of the Young Turks brought further troubles for the Armenians, for whereas the Ottomans had ruled a multiethnic empire, the Ataturk regime championed Turkish nationalism. Faced with revolutionary movements in the Balkans, the Young Turks justified oppression of the Armenians as a measure to stave off a two-front attack; "in the Turkish mind," writes Balakian, "the struggle to keep the Balkans was never far from the Armenian Question." This time the death toll was far higher; Balakian estimates that between 1.2 and 1.3 million Armenians were killed in the years between 1915 and 1922, though some historians put the figure at 1.5 million. Again, writes Balakian, American sentiment was with the Armenians, many survivors among whom emigrated to the US. Butin the years since, despite the Turkish government’s crimes against its people, the Armenian genocide has been gone unacknowledged, the product of a "sinister . . . Turkish campaign of denial . . . that is perhaps singular in the annals of history"a campaign that, Balakian says, successfully persuaded Bill Clinton to kill a House measure to commemorate the genocide "for the sake of ‘national security.’ " Thoroughly convincing and one more reason for the governments of the West, including the Clinton administration, to be ashamed.

For most people, having discovered the world's most famous shipwreck would be enough. But consider this; He did not just stumble across that wreck like a scuba diver might happen upon across a previously unknown sunken vessel simply by chance. Furthermore, although the Titanic made him famous, he went on to find many more shipwrecks the most celebrated of which was the Bismarck. In addition he visited the site of the Battle of Midway where he located the remains of the 19,900 ton aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and other important ships. Then he produced a work which, for me at least, is probably his finest. That book was "The Lost Ships of Guadalcanal" in which the position of a large number of warships are mapped on the seabed and individual accounts include the loss of the heavy cruiser HMAS Canberra (the "A" stands for Australian) and USS Quincy - to name but two. All these finds - and others, are recorded in his various outstanding books. In this autobiography, Ballard starts in 1967 with his attendance at a very important lecture. From that point onwards, we follow his career through the peaks and troughs of success and tribulation as we join him on his life spent in search of whatever he might be seeking underwater - not all of which are shipwrecks. From the study of lava formations to the Jason Project, this is an account of one of the most interesting and illuminating lives of modern times. The book does suffer from a few annoying little errors - such as the photograph of USS Barton on the seabed being upside down and a reference to "HMS" Canberra but these do not spoil one's enjoyment of the work which provides a full and accurate appreciation of this man's life and achievements. Because it is an account of his life, I would have liked to have found a desire to see the Titanic preserved. My understanding is that no vessel can be considered for international protection until she has been lost for 100 years. The Titanic was, of course, lost in 1912 and huge sections of the ship have already been brought to the surface. I earnestly believe that if Dr Ballard had launched a campaign to protect that ship, she might well have been considered for early designation - after all, over 1,500 people did lose their lives when she sank. That, however, is a personal comment and this is an altogether excellent, often riveting, read and one which will be thoroughly enjoyed.

Rutgers political scientist Barber, author of Strong Democracy (1984) and Jihad vs. McWorld (1995), was one of several dozen academics and intellectuals who participated in an ongoing conversation with the Clinton White House. His book describes "my affair with Clinton," giving Barber an opportunity to muse about the relationship between ideas and politics, the shifting ideology of the Democratic Party, and "the President's remarkable personality." Barber took part in seminars, contributed ideas to speechwriters, and hoped, for a time, to be nominated to head the National Endowment for the Humanities. (He lost out to Mississippi folklorist Bill Ferris, whose advantages included political invisibility and the support of Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott.) Barber is enough of a "strong" Democrat to recognize that, given the choice of responding to intellectuals or to polls, Clinton did the right thing in responding to polls. Assessing Clinton's legacy, Barber focuses on his failure to articulate an inspiring vision to unite his many small-bore programs: a failure for which Barber (and his fellow intellectuals) must accept some responsibility.
