Very-light page-tanning from age. NO foxing - 268 pages. Totem and Taboo comprises four essays originally published separately in the journal Imago between 1912 and 1913. The first essay, The Horror of Incest, was published in March 1912; Taboo and Emotional Ambivalence was delivered to the Vienna Psychoanalytical Society on 15th May 1912, and published later that year. The third and fourth essays, Animism, Magic and the Omnipotence of Thoughts and The Return of Totemism in Childhood were presented to the Vienna Society on 15th January and 4th June 1913 respectively, and then subsequently published that year in the second volume of Imago. *** The first English-language publication was in a translation by A. A. Brill (New York, 1918; London, 1919***). Within the next twelve years the book was translated into Hungarian (1918), Spanish (1923), French (1924) and Japanese (1930). The essays represent Freud's first major contribution to social psychology, a preoccupation of his later works, and, according to his biographer Ernest Jones, Totem and Taboo was one of Freud's favourite studies: here Freud combines social anthropology, philology and folklore with psychoanalysis in order to deduce the original meaning of totemism from the vestiges remaining of it in childhood. He examines a wide range of totemic practices drawn from Australia, Africa, Malaysia, Melanesia and Polynesia, correlating the development of civilization with the prohibition of instincts. By contending that the mental life of savages or half-savages presents a well-preserved picture of an early stage of our own development, Freud is able to trace a correspondence between the psychology of primitive peoples and the psychology of neurotics. In spite of its deeply Eurocentric assumptions, there are many fascinating aspects to Freud's initial foray into cultural pathology. He sets outs to demonstrate that the study of the psychology of the neuroses is important for an understanding of the growth of civilization, that emotional ambivalence lies at the root of many important cultural institutions and that the beginnings of religion, morals, society and art converge in the Oedipus complex.
