Tight spine - Bright pages. - In a book as provocative and insightful as Deborah Tannen's You Just Don't Understand, Barreca explores the new politics of marriage. "Feminist humor maven Regina Barreca takes on marriage with her characteristic wit and wisdom, demystifying the institution's roles and expectations clearly and usefully."--Ms. From the Publisher In Perfect Husbands (& Other Fairy Tales), a book as provocative as Colette Dowling's The Cinderella Complex and Deborah Tannen's You Just Don't Understand, Regina Barreca explores the new politics of marriage in a witty, engaging guide to the evolving roles of husbands and wives in a radically changed world. Myths, images, and roles mark the place of the husband in contemporary American culture. While the social script for marriage in the Western world has undergone fundamental and irrevocable change in the last fifty years, the concept of the husband as the breadwinner, as head of the household, as the patriarch of the family has always been a sensitive subject for men and women alike. With humor and grace, Barreca helps us to understand the reality of the new equality and what really goes on behind closed doors. "The questions facing women and men in the 1990s don't involve whether people will pair off - there have always been couples and there will continue to be - but the questions are 'What kinds of partnerships do we expect?'" writes Regina Barreca. "'What kinds of romances do we want?' 'What kinds of marriages should we enter into - and what kinds should we leave?' And, most important, 'What kinds of relationships - and what kinds of loves - will we create for ourselves in the long run?'" Price:

Barreca, Regina They Used to Call Me Snow White...but I Drifted: Women's Strategic Use of Humor New York, New York, U.S.A. Dustcover is clean and bright, shows light wear (NO tears). Tight spine, clean pages. ONLY writing/mark inside book is small gift inscription in book front on blank page (To Nancy Nurse on her 45th w/love, Ann). NO tears inside book. 223 pages. Artfully combining sociology, psychology, and feminist theory, here is a fascinating and entertaining look at how women can use humor to their advantage. This witty--and at times deliciously ribald--book examines women's humor and shows how the proper punchline can work wonders on the street, in the bedroom, and even in the corporate boardroom. From Publishers Weekly To the tired question "Why don't women have a sense of humor?" Barreca (editor of Last Laughs ) replies: they do. But only Bad Girls use their sense of humor, she argues, because they are not afraid of what its use implies--the decision to understand sexual innuendo, occupy center stage and break rules. The more Barreca repeats her thesis--that women's humor is subversive because it stems from women's power, which many men find threatening--the less interesting it becomes. But her analysis of the Good Girl/Bad Girl dichotomy in books, movies and TV sitcoms is illuminating. She distinguishes between the self-deprecating humor of earlier female comics like Phyllis Diller (who noted that the best method of birth control was to leave the lights on) and Diller's current counterparts (Elayne Boosler, Rita Rudner), who sharpen their wit on the world at large. A funny bone may well be the most forceful weapon feminists possess, Barreca claims. And despite an annoying tendency to make sweeping generalizations about both sexes, she offers good advice about how to wield the weapon of humor wisely. First serial to Cosmopolitan. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Barreca, editor of Last Laughs: Perspectives on Women and Comedy (Gordon & Breach, 1988), explores the relationship of women and humor. She discusses the differences between men and women in how they use humor, what they think is funny and how they are perceived when telling jokes. Giving the book a strong feminist bent, Barreca theorizes that women are not encouraged to be funny and are even perceived as "bad girls" if they are funny. She quotes extensively from other researchers in the field, as well as from comediennes, authors, and cartoonists. Her coverage is extensive, ranging from Mae West to Sandra Bernhard, Emily Bronte to Erica Jong, "I Love Lucy" to "Designing Women." The added bonus is the wealth of humor included as examples in the book. Recommended.-- Kathy Ingels Helmond, Indiana Univ. Purdue Univ. at Indianapolis Lib. Price:
