Hazleton, Lesley England, Bloody England: An Expatriate's Return New York, New York, U.S.A. Atlantic Monthly Pr 1990 0871133296 / 9780871133298 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine Like-New copy - No writing or marks of any kind - Stated First Edition - Price inside dustcover: $19.95 - Mauve & blue boards with silver lettering - 205 pages - Journalist Hazleton ( Where Mountains Roar ) here writes with skill and cutting wit--if occasional shrillness--of her alienation from her native England, cataloguing the views of a ``self-respecting Anglophobe'' on a society she considers bigoted, a country decaying under an outmoded class system from which many flee to find the opportunities lacking at home. Among other flaws in the British character Hazleton zeroes in on is the passivity that allowed Thatcher to slash funds for education and national health care. The author also speculates on why Blunt, Philby, Burgess and MacLean spied for the Soviets and why news of their treachery was long suppressed. Her targets extend to royalty and even to the kitsch sold at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, ``quaint gifts'' as embarrassing to Will's spirit as to hers, she contends. The Bard proves to be one of the few Britons this expatriate admires. Price:

Hazleton, Lesley Jerusalem, Jerusalem: A Memoir of War and Peace, Passion and Politics Atlantic Monthly Press 1986 0871130645 / 9780871130648 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near-Fine Dustcover shows slight wear (NO tears) - Book is in Fine Condition. Stated First Edition - Price inside dustcover: $16.95 - Red boards with black spine (gilt lettering) - 243 pages - Tight spine - Bright pages - NO writing, marks or tears inside book. Affecting and compelling, this is a gifted writer's effort to understand herself and a city she cannot live with or without. A British Jew, Hazleton (Where the Mountains Roar, etc.) first went to Jerusalem at the age of 20, remained 13 years, then moved to New York City. Five years later, in 1984, she returned for what she intended would be a final breaking away, only to find herself drawn yet again to the much-changed city: ``The truth is that I felt at home in this place I was determined to leave,'' she writes. Recalling the innocence of the pasther own and the city'sshe writes vividly of the passions and wars that have wracked Jerusalem and all of Israel (the ``blood and racism and hatred''); the religious-secular clash for ``the soul of the city''; and the friendships and excitement that continue to attract her to this ``city of paradox.'' Her reflections and conversations with writers and intellectuals illuminate every facet of life in today's Israel. Price:
