Moore, Margaret Complete Charleston 2007-2008: A Guide to the Architecture, History, Gardens and Food TM Photography, Inc. 2007 096601443X / 9780966014433 Trade Paperback Fine Moore, Truman Near-new condition. NO remainder marks or clippings. Tight spine, bright pages. 320 pages. Illustrated throughout. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. Review Essential! --In Style Magazine The premise that the only way to experience Charleston satisfactorily is on foot is scarcely new, but Peg Moore s is by miles of shoe leather the most comprehensive ambulatory guide to the Holy City that has appeared. Her principal collaborator, in book-making as in life, has been her husband Truman Moore, whose very accomplished photographs appear on nearly every page of this copiously illustrated guide. Robert Russell, Addlestone Professor of Architectural History at the College of Charleston, furnished two essays giving overviews of Charleston s architectural evolution and that of Lowcountry society, together with a succinct and amazingly lucid Glossary of Architectural terms. The guide proper is divided into 11 chapters, each featuring a walking tour of a different area of the peninsula. Perhaps most valuable of these...deal with the less traveled streets...full of fascinating architecture and richly-layered history. Each walk is preceded by a map showing the route to be taken and the number of landmarks to be encountered. The final third of Complete Charleston moves away from the peninsula to explore up and down the coast (the Ashley River plantations, Brookgreen, Georgetown and Beaufort), returning to sample some of the 130 restaurants in the historic district. Having savored her food columns, Mercury readers will know that Peg Moore s command of the complex Charleston restaurant scene is magisterial. The thirty-page Restaurants section that concludes Complete Charleston is alone worth the modest price of the whole book. I hope it does not sound patronizing to report that I learned new things about my city from this book, and suspect many other old-growth locals would as well. --Seabrook Wilkenson, Charleston Mercury This cool little guidebook! --Rachel Ray, Food Network Price:
