Synopsis In 11 Days In December, master historian and biographer Stanley Weintraub tells the remarkable story of the Battle of the Bulge as it has never been told before, from frozen foxholes to barn shelters to boxcars packed with wretched prisoners of war. In late December 1944, as the Battle of the Bulge neared its climax, a German loudspeaker challenge was blared across GI lines in the Ardennes: "How would you like to die for Christmas?" In the inhospitable forest straddling Belgium, France, and Luxembourg, only the dense, snow-laden evergreens recalled the season. Most troops hardly knew the calendar day they were trying to live through, or that it was Hitler's last, desperate effort to alter the war's outcome. Yet the final Christmas season of World War II matched desperation with inspiration. When he was offered an ultimatum to surrender the besieged Belgian town of Bastogne, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe defied the Germans with the memorable one-word response, "Nuts!" And as General Patton prayed for clear skies to allow vital airborne reinforcements to reach his trapped men, he stood in a medieval chapel in Luxembourg and spoke to God as if to a commanding general: "Sir, whose side are you on?" His prayer was answered. The skies cleared, the tide of battle turned, and Allied victory in World War II was assured. Christmas 1944 proved to be one of the most fateful days in world history. Many men did extraordinary things, and extraordinary things happened to ordinary men. "A clear cold Christmas," Patton told his diary, "lovely weather for killing Germans, which seems a bit queer, seeing whose birthday it is." Peace on earth and good will toward men wouldhave to wait. 11 Days in December is unforgettable. The Washington Post - Vince Rinehart Reading Stanley Weintraub's 11 Days in December: Christmas at the Bulge, 1944 is like sitting down with an entertaining raconteur steeped in World War II's history and literature. This is a rewarding mosaic of personal stories, woven around two themes: Christmas and a broader military picture of a battle in which, according to official estimates, almost 81,000 Americans and more than 98,000 Germans were killed, wounded or captured. Weintraub, Stanley Charlotte and Lionel: A Rothschild Love Story Free Press 2003 0743226860 / 9780743226868 Hard Cover Fine Fine Near-new copy - NO remainder marks or price clippings - Price inside dustcover: $27.50 - Illustrated - 316 pages - NO writing, marks or tears - "Charlotte was young and beautiful. Lionel, almost ten years older, was rich and her cousin. Theirs was an arranged betrothal joining two branches of Europe's most powerful banking firm. It seemed an unlikely love match, and even their wedding had to survive catastrophe. Yet their marriage lasted through tragedies and triumphs. Charlotte became one of the grand chatelaines of the Victorian era; Lionel, England's leading financier persevered through years of bigotry to become the first of his faith to be seated in Parliament. In Charlotte and Lionel, acclaimed biographer Stanley Weintraub, using full access to the Rothschild family archives, tells the story of their stunning and surprising love for each other, opening a fascinating window into a memorable age." Lionel (and, behind the scenes, Charlotte) influenced events worldwide, helping to fund relief to a starving Ireland, aiding persecuted Jews in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, brokering the purchase of the Suez Canal, and arranging for France's postwar reparations to Germany. Yet despite the distractions of their power, glamour, and wealth, and problems of health for which money could buy no solutions, they remained intensely devoted to each other and their family. Although Charlotte lost a daughter, then her beloved husband, and had to come back herself from severe illness, she remained unbroken. Price:

Weintraub, Stanley Long Day's Journey into War: December 7, 1941 New York, New York, U.S.A. Truman Talley Books / E.P. Dutton 1991 0525933441 / 9780525933441 Hard Cover Fine Fine A photo of this book is available. Like-new condition. Appears unread. NO remainder marks or dustcover clippings. Tight spine, bright pages. 706 pages. Illustrated. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. From Publishers Weekly: Weintraub's "long day" is essentially the weekend in 1941 that included Pearl Harbor Sunday. With consummate skill he weaves together anecdotal material from around the world to describe events in that momentous span of time. He includes narrative snapshots from the Nazi death camps and the war fronts in Russia, North Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as governmental and civil doings in Washington, London, Berlin, Moscow, Rome, Tokyo, Singapore, Honolulu and elsewhere. Signs of imminent war between Japan and the United States accelerate and messages marked "extremely urgent" cross paths in both hemispheres. In addition to focusing on such grand-scale historical figures as Roosevelt, Churchill, Hirohito and Hitler, Weintraub also shines a spotlight on such folk as Army Private James Jones who later fictionalized his Pearl Harbor Day experiences in From Here to Eternity ; poet Ezra Pound, who made a pro-fascist broadcast in Italy that weekend; fighter ace Saburo Sakai, who added American planes to his already impressive tally during the invasion of the Philippines that weekend; and songwriter/singer Woody Guthrie, who helped defuse a racial confrontation in Los Angeles. The centerpiece, however, is the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, and Weintraub provides an awe-inspiring account of the December 7 attack and its psychological aftermath. This is an ambitious and stunningly successful hour-by-hour chronicle of what may be the most memorable weekend in modern history. Weintraub is the author of A Stillness Heard Round the World: The End of the Great War. BOMC and History Book Club selections. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal: Weintraub has a knack for presenting a kaleidoscopic view of the great pivot points of modern history. In this book he takes the reader hour by hour through the fateful weekend which changed the balance of World War II. This is far more than another reprise of the Pearl Harbor disaster, however. Weintraub's fast-moving narrative shifts from scene to scene across the entire globe as events march to their climaxes throughout the South Pacific, and from the snows of Russia to the North African desert. The emphasis is always upon ordinary people caught up in overwhelming events. The author follows much the same format as in his treatment of the last days of World War I, A Stillness Heard Round the World ( LJ 8/85). In concept and readability, the book compares well with William K. Klingaman's chatty social history of the period, 1941: Our Lives in a World on the Edge ( LJ 10/1/88). Recommended. BOMC selection. - Raymond L. Puffer, U.S. Air Force History Prog., Los Angeles Price:
