The volume incorporates previously published work alongside new photographs to convey basic concepts. Three canines in butcher, baker and candlestick-maker garb "rub-a-dub-dub" in a tub in the "Nursery Rhymes" section; Fay Ray gets an X-ray to demonstrate the letter "X" in the "Dog Alphabet." Man Ray, Fay Ray, Chundo, Batty, Crooky and Chip oblige the author by representing, by costume and form, topics of interest to young children. Included are occupations, numbers, nursery rhymes, the alphabet, shapes and the guessing game, Animal, Vegetable or Mineral. The book begins with the author's definition of Wegmanology—"a collection of works, starring William Wegman's amazingly talented weimaraners." That being said, this can certainly be described as a visual book, words being used most often to title the photographs. These dogs appear serene even when they are arranged to form the letters of the alphabet, which must require great patience, both canine and human. Their nonplussed expressions are constant, whether wigged, buried under sand or dressed like an elephant. Young children will be amazed and adults will be amused with these "grey ghosts" of the dog world and with the imagination and wit of the author/photographer.
